Cabaret is a musical with a book by Joe Masteroff, music by John Kander, and lyrics by Fred Ebb, based on the play "I Am a Camera" by John Van Druten, which is itself an adaptation of the novel "Goodbye to Berlin" by Christopher Isherwood. Set in 1929 Berlin, as Nazism was beginning to take hold, the musical's plot revolves around the decadent Kit Kat Klub and the relationship between its main star, English singer Sally Bowles, and American writer Cliff Bradshaw, who comes to the city seeking inspiration for his novel. Another plot point in the play centers on the autumn romance between Fräulein Schneider, a German woman who runs the boarding house where Cliff and Sally stay, and Herr Schultz, a Jewish widower who owns a fruit shop, all of whom are observed through the eyes of the Kit Kat Klub's master of ceremonies. The cabaret serves as a metaphor for the terrible political changes that took place in the final days of the Weimar Republic.
